The practice of debt settlement is not new to the 21st century, it has been happening for thousands of years. Going back to Biblical times, people have always borrowed to get things they wanted and needed but did not have the money to pay for. The nature of the money-lending business is that lenders have always charged exorbitant rates of interest for the money they lend, because people have always been prepared to pay. And when they have not been able to pay on time, lenders have demanded their pound of flesh.

But lenders always want to get something back, so when enough of their clients hit hard times, they will negotiate, rather than lose everything. Most people, and all societies at large, go through times of hardship. The lenders are usually the ones who survive intact. All that happens to them is that they make a little less profit.

Did it ruin you’re credit rating?

I am trying to help someone who has aboout $10,000 in credit card debt, spread over 6 cards, get things turned around. Is there anyone who knows the options they have and which processes are the best. Any help is greatly appreciated.

do consumer credit counciling programs really work?

I talked to one about $30,000 in debt on credit cards (don’t ask) and they said they could pay it all off in 3 and 1/2 years, I am getting a lower interest rate, but not any reduction in my debt, is this better than bankruptcy?

Which of these issues can a mediator help work out?

Recently broke up with girlfriend/Mother of my child. Need to work out the following issues:

1) Child support. I make $80,000/year. She isn’t working but will finish school and be making $60,000/year in a few months. Can someone help me with what child support will be in both cases? We live in Missouri, custody will be 50/50, and I pay $150/month for our child’s health insurance.
2) Between ex girlfriend and myself, we owe about $25,000 in debt in ex girlfriend’s name. I’ve asked for itemized credit card statements twice so we can determine how much of the debt is actually mine with no responses. Originally she expected me to pay off all of the debt. Now she says she will “help” but without knowing how much each of us owes, I’m sure I’ll be paying much more than I should. Can/will a mediator help with this sort of thing?
3) Mediation participants. She wants her parents to be present during the mediation. While I don’t mind if they’re present during the negotiations regarding item #3 (some of the debt is owed to them), I don’t think it’s appropriate for a 30 year old woman to have them present during the mediation (they will whisper in her ear and run the show for her). Is this normal/allowed?

I would greatly appreciate an answer to any one of these questions. I plan on talking to my lawyer before I walk into this but I won’t be able to meet with her for a week. Thanks to anyone who can help.
Correction to #3:
“I don’t mind if they’re present during the negotiations regarding item #2″
I edited my post a few dozen times. :)
In response to insomniac:
I don’t want a bigger part of the pie. I want to pay my debt and not hers. Is that unfair in some way?
I also don’t resent her parents. I love them like they’re my own parents. I just assumed matters pertaining to a child should be worked out between the child’s parents and I wondered if having grandparents participate was normal.
